How Much Fuel Does My Car Use?

Why the catalogue figure is not your answer

Every car has a published consumption figure, and almost nobody matches it. Those numbers come from standardised laboratory cycles: a fixed speed profile, a warm engine, no air conditioning, no roof box, no traffic and no hills. Your driving has all of those. The gap between the brochure and the pump is normal, and it is usually between ten and thirty percent.

The only figure that describes your car is the one measured from your own fill-ups. It accounts for how you drive, the roads you use, the weight you carry and the state of the car — none of which a laboratory can know.

The method that works

Measuring consumption properly needs two full tanks, not one:

1. Fill the tank completely and note the odometer.
2. Drive normally until the tank is low — the more distance, the more accurate.
3. Fill the tank completely again and note the litres and the new odometer reading.
4. Consumption = litres added ÷ kilometres driven × 100.

The reason both fills must be complete is simple: the litres you add at the second stop are exactly the litres you burned since the first one. If either fill is partial, you are dividing by an unknown, and the result means nothing. This is the single most common mistake people make.
